      About Ryanair

Ryanair (IATA: FR) is Europe's largest low-cost airline, headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. Founded in 1984, it has grown into one of the world's busiest carriers, operating over 3,600 flights per day to more than 230 destinations across 40+ countries. Its fleet of over 500 Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft operates primarily from secondary airports across Europe, keeping costs — and fares — low.

Because Ryanair is an EU-registered carrier, EC 261/2004 applies more broadly to its flights than to non-EU airlines like Turkish Airlines or Pegasus. This means a wider range of disruptions — including flights arriving into the EU from outside — may entitle you to compensation.

How EC 261/2004 Applies to Ryanair

Because Ryanair is an EU carrier, EC 261/2004 covers a broader set of its flights compared to non-EU airlines:

Flight scenario EC 261 applies? Compensation for 3h+ delay?
EU airport → anywhere (Ryanair) Yes Yes — up to €600
Non-EU airport → EU airport (Ryanair) Yes — EU carrier rule Yes — up to €600
UK airport → anywhere (Ryanair) UK261 applies Yes — up to £520
      Non-EU, non-UK → non-EU (Ryanair) No Local law only
Key advantage over non-EU carriers: Because Ryanair is EU-registered, EC 261 covers its flights arriving into the EU from outside — for example, a Ryanair flight from Morocco to Brussels. For non-EU airlines like Turkish Airlines or Pegasus, only EU-departing flights are covered. Nearly all Ryanair flights qualify under EC 261.

What about UK flights after Brexit?

Since the UK left the EU, flights departing from UK airports are no longer covered by EC 261/2004. Instead, UK Air Passenger Rights Regulation 2019 (UK261) applies, which mirrors EC 261 with compensation of up to £520. Ryanair operates extensively from UK airports including London Stansted, Manchester, and Edinburgh, so many passengers flying from the UK are still protected.

How Much Compensation Can You Claim?

Compensation is set by regulation and based on flight distance — not the price of your ticket. Even if you paid €9.99 for your seat, you are entitled to the same fixed amounts.

      €250
      Up to 1,500 km
      e.g. London → Dublin
      Madrid → Lisbon
      €400
      1,500 – 3,500 km
      e.g. London → Tenerife
      Dublin → Marrakech
      €600
      Over 3,500 km
      e.g. London → Tel Aviv
      Madrid → Cairo

For flights over 3,500 km, compensation may be reduced to €300 if the delay at arrival is between 3 and 4 hours. The full €600 applies when the delay exceeds 4 hours.

When Are You Entitled to Compensation?

      Flight delays

You are entitled to compensation if your Ryanair flight arrived at your final destination 3 or more hours late, and the delay was caused by factors within Ryanair's control. The delay is measured at arrival — when the aircraft doors open at your destination — not at departure.

      Flight cancellations

You are entitled to compensation if Ryanair cancelled your flight and notified you fewer than 14 days before departure, and no suitable alternative was offered. You are also always entitled to a full refund or rerouting, regardless of the notice period.

Whether compensation is due depends on the notice given and the alternative flight offered:

      Notice givenAlternative offeredCompensation due?
      14+ daysAnyNo
      7–14 daysDeparts ≤2h earlier, arrives ≤4h laterNo
7–14 daysDoes not meet above criteriaYes
Less than 7 daysDeparts ≤1h earlier, arrives ≤2h laterNo
Less than 7 daysDoes not meet above criteriaYes

      Denied boarding (overbooking)

If Ryanair prevented you from boarding an overbooked flight against your will, you are entitled to compensation of €250–€600, plus a full refund or rerouting, plus care at the airport.

Your Right to Care During a Delay

      Delay durationWhat Ryanair must provide
From 15 minutesWritten notice of delay and your options
2 hours+Free meals and drinks · 2 free phone calls or emails
3–5 hoursFull meal appropriate to time of day
5 hours+All of the above + right to a full ticket refund
Overnight delayHotel accommodation + airport transfers (both ways)

Keep all receipts. If Ryanair did not provide these services, you can claim reimbursement for reasonable expenses — even if the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances.

      Extraordinary Circumstances: What Counts?

Ryanair does not owe financial compensation when a disruption is caused by events outside its control that could not have been avoided even with all reasonable measures. These include:

      • Severe weather (storms, heavy snow, lightning)
      • Air traffic control strikes or restrictions
      • Airport security incidents
      • Political unrest or natural disasters
      • Medical emergencies on board
Ryanair's large operation works against it here. Ryanair operates 3,600+ flights per day. Courts have consistently ruled that technical faults and crew shortages in a large, scheduled operation are foreseeable and therefore not extraordinary circumstances. If Ryanair cites "technical issues" or "crew availability" as the cause of your delay, you are likely still entitled to compensation. Voos will challenge these rejections.

      How to Claim Ryanair Compensation

      1.
Gather your documents — Ryanair booking reference, boarding pass or e-ticket, any delay notification, and receipts for expenses incurred.
      2.
Check eligibility — confirm whether your flight departed from or arrived in the EU (or departed from the UK for UK261), and that you arrived 3+ hours late. Delay is measured at arrival, not departure.
      3.
Submit a written claim to Ryanair — use Ryanair's online compensation form and reference EC 261/2004. Note: Ryanair strongly encourages direct claims to avoid third-party fees, but often responds slowly or issues vague rejections.
      4.
Escalate if rejected — contact your national ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) body or national enforcement authority: CAA (UK) · Irish Aviation Authority (Ireland) · LBA (Germany) · DGAC (France).
      5.
Or let Voos handle it — one submission, and we manage all correspondence, ADR referrals, and legal steps. No win, no fee.
Do not accept vouchers without reading the terms. Ryanair may offer travel credits instead of cash compensation. Under EC 261/2004, you are entitled to cash. Vouchers can expire, carry blackout dates, or require additional spending — always insist on a bank transfer.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, provided the delay was caused by factors within Ryanair's control and the flight departed from or arrived in the EU (or departed from the UK under UK261). The compensation amount depends on the distance of your flight: €250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500–3,500 km, and €600 for over 3,500 km.

With fewer than 7 days' notice, you are entitled to both a full refund or rerouting, and financial compensation of €250–€600, unless Ryanair offered an alternative flight departing no more than 1 hour before the original and arriving no more than 2 hours after. If no comparable alternative was offered, full compensation applies.

Yes. Because Ryanair is an EU-registered carrier, EC 261/2004 covers its flights arriving into the EU even when departing from outside. A flight from Marrakech to Madrid with Ryanair is covered — this is different from a non-EU airline on the same route, which would not be.

Not necessarily. Given the scale of Ryanair's operation (3,600+ flights per day), courts have consistently found that crew shortages and technical faults are foreseeable and therefore not extraordinary circumstances. Ryanair must prove the extraordinary circumstance — the burden of proof is on the airline. If you doubt their stated reason, submit your claim through Voos and we will investigate.

No. Under EC 261/2004, you are entitled to cash compensation. Ryanair can only offer vouchers or travel credits with your explicit written agreement. Vouchers can expire, carry blackout dates, or come with conditions that reduce their real value. Always request a bank transfer.

Time limits vary by country — typically 2–6 years from the date of the disrupted flight in EU countries, and up to 6 years in some jurisdictions. In the UK, the limitation period is generally 6 years. We recommend claiming as soon as possible while evidence is fresh.

For flights departing from UK airports, UK Air Passenger Rights Regulation 2019 (UK261) applies — not EC 261/2004. The rules are very similar, with compensation of up to £520 per passenger. Voos can assist with UK261 claims as well.
      Compensation Amounts
      • Up to 1,500 km €250
      • 1,500 – 3,500 km €400
      • Over 3,500 km €600

Amounts are fixed by EC 261/2004 — Ryanair cannot legally offer less. Not affected by ticket price.
