Air Passenger Rights: Delays, Cancellations, and Compensation

When flying with Air China, passengers may be entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004 (commonly known as EU 261 or EC 261) in the event of flight delays, cancellations, or denied boarding. EU 261 applies if your Air China flight departed from an airport within the European Union, regardless of your final destination. If your journey started outside the EU and your Air China flight was heading to the EU, EU 261 compensation does not apply since Air China is a non-EU airline. Compensation rights also depend on the reason for the disruption and whether it was within the airline's control.

Under EU 261, if your Air China flight was delayed by more than three hours upon arrival, cancelled without sufficient notice, or if you were denied boarding due to overbooking, you may be eligible for financial compensation. The compensation amounts are determined by the flight distance:

      • For flights up to 1,500 km: €250 per person
      • For flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km: €400 per person
      • For flights over 3,500 km: €600 per person

Compensation claims can be made for delays of three hours or more, cancellations announced less than 14 days before departure, or denied boarding due to overbooking. Remember, extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather or air traffic control strikes may exempt the airline from compensation obligations.
