Air Passenger Rights: Delays & Cancellations

If your China Airlines flight was delayed or cancelled, you may be entitled to compensation according to European Union Regulation EC 261/2004 (also known as EU 261). These passenger rights apply when your flight departs from an airport within the European Union, regardless of the airline, or when you are flying to the EU with an EU-based airline. For China Airlines flights, EU 261 compensation is applicable only if your journey originates from an EU country. Flights departing from non-EU countries to the EU with China Airlines are not covered by EU 261, as China Airlines is not an EU carrier.

Under EU 261, you may be eligible for compensation if your flight is delayed by more than three hours upon arrival, or if your flight is cancelled without sufficient notice. Compensation amounts are determined by the flight distance:

      • Up to 1,500 km: €250 per passenger
      • 1,500 – 3,500 km: €400 per passenger
      • Over 3,500 km: €600 per passenger

These compensation rights apply unless the delay or cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances, such as severe weather or air traffic control strikes. If you experience a long delay or your flight is cancelled, China Airlines is also required to provide care, including meals, refreshments, accommodation if necessary, and communication facilities.
