      About Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines (IATA: OS) is the flag carrier of Austria and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. Founded in 1957 and headquartered at Vienna International Airport (VIE), Austrian is a member of the Star Alliance and serves approximately 130 destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. Vienna's central location makes it a key connecting hub between Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe, with Austrian holding particular strength in destinations such as Moscow, Kyiv, Kiev, Warsaw, and destinations throughout the Balkans.

Austrian is in the midst of a comprehensive fleet modernisation. It is retiring its entire fleet of 17 Embraer 195 regional aircraft (being transferred to Lufthansa Group sister company Air Dolomiti from late 2025) and replacing them with 6 new Airbus A320neo jets, the first arriving in summer 2026. On the long-haul side, Austrian is replacing its ageing Boeing 767-300ERs and Boeing 777-200ERs with up to 12 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with deliveries running through to 2028. Summer 2026 sees Austrian serve its largest ever network of 133 destinations.

How EC 261/2004 Applies to Austrian Flights

Austrian Airlines is an EU-registered carrier headquartered in Austria, so EC 261/2004 applies broadly — both to flights departing from the EU and to flights arriving into the EU on Austrian from outside. This means passengers flying Austrian from New York, Tokyo, or Bangkok to Vienna are also covered, unlike those flying non-EU carriers on comparable routes.

Flight scenario Regulation Compensation for 3h+ delay?
EU airport → anywhere (Austrian or any airline) EC 261/2004 Yes — up to €600
Non-EU airport → EU airport (Austrian) EC 261/2004 (EU carrier rule) Yes — up to €600
UK airport → anywhere (Austrian) UK261 Yes — up to £520
Non-EU, non-UK → non-EU/UK (Austrian) Local law Depends on country
Austrian ≠ Lufthansa for compensation purposes. Austrian Airlines operates under its own Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) and is legally separate from Lufthansa. If your flight was operated by Austrian (OS flight number), your claim goes to Austrian Airlines — not Lufthansa. This is true even if the ticket was sold by Lufthansa or another Star Alliance partner.

How Much Compensation Can You Claim?

Compensation is fixed by regulation and depends on flight distance — not ticket price or cabin class.

      €250
      Up to 1,500 km
      e.g. Vienna → London
      Vienna → Rome
      €400
      1,500 – 3,500 km
      e.g. Vienna → Dubai
      Vienna → Cairo
      €600
      Over 3,500 km
      e.g. Vienna → New York
      Vienna → Tokyo

For flights over 3,500 km, compensation may be reduced to €300 if the arrival delay is between 3 and 4 hours. The full €600 applies when the delay exceeds 4 hours. Under UK261, the equivalent amounts are £220, £350, and £520.

When Are You Entitled to Compensation?

      Flight delays

You are entitled to compensation if your Austrian flight arrived at your final destination 3 or more hours late, the delay was caused by factors within Austrian's control, and the flight was covered by EC 261. The clock starts when the aircraft doors open at your destination — not at departure.

      Flight cancellations

You are entitled to compensation if Austrian cancelled your flight and notified you fewer than 14 days before departure, and no comparable alternative was offered. You always have the right to a full cash refund or rerouting regardless of the notice period or reason for cancellation.

      Denied boarding

If Austrian denied you boarding against your will — typically due to overbooking — you are entitled to €250–€600 compensation, plus a full refund or rerouting, plus care at the airport.

      Austrian staff strikes

Austrian Airlines has experienced significant labour disruptions. In March 2024, Austrian faced a 36-hour strike that resulted in widespread cancellations at Vienna Airport. Strikes by Austrian's own employees over internal pay and contract disputes are not considered extraordinary circumstances under European Court of Justice case law — Austrian owes compensation when its own staff go on strike. Passengers confirmed receiving full EC 261 compensation for the March 2024 strike.

Austrian staff strikes = compensable. Ground staff, pilot, and cabin crew strikes are within the airline's operational sphere. ATC strikes and third-party airport worker strikes are extraordinary circumstances and are not compensable. Do not let Austrian cite a strike as an automatic reason to deny your claim.

      Rerouting via Lufthansa Group carriers

If Austrian cannot rebook you promptly on its own flights, you are entitled to be rebooked on any available alternative — including other airlines — to reach your destination as soon as possible. Austrian may try to reroute you only via Lufthansa Group carriers (Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings). You are not obliged to accept a later connection on a group airline if a faster alternative exists. If you paid for your own rerouting, keep all receipts and claim reimbursement.

      Downgrading

If Austrian moved you to a lower cabin class for operational reasons, you are entitled to a partial ticket refund under EC 261:

      • Flights up to 1,500 km: 30% of the ticket price
      • Flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km: 50% of the ticket price
      • Flights over 3,500 km: 75% of the ticket price

Your Right to Care During a Delay

      Delay durationWhat Austrian must provide
2 hours+Free meals and drinks · 2 free phone calls or emails
3–5 hoursFull meal appropriate to the time of day
5 hours+All of the above + right to a full ticket refund
Overnight delayHotel accommodation + airport transfers (both ways)

These care rights apply even during extraordinary circumstances. Keep all receipts — if Austrian failed to provide these, you can claim reimbursement for reasonable expenses.

      When Is Compensation Not Available?

Austrian does not owe financial compensation when a disruption is caused by genuine extraordinary circumstances beyond its control:

      • Severe weather (storms, dense fog, heavy snow)
      • Air traffic control (Austro Control) strikes or airspace restrictions
      • Airport security incidents or closures at Vienna or other airports
      • Political unrest or natural disasters
      • Medical emergencies on board
      • Bird strikes or externally caused technical damage
Technical faults and crew shortages are not extraordinary circumstances. If Austrian cites a technical issue or staffing problem as the reason for your delay, compensation is still due. The burden of proof lies with Austrian — not the passenger. Voos will challenge unjustified rejections on your behalf.

How to Claim Austrian Airlines Compensation

      1.
Gather your documents — Austrian booking reference, boarding pass or e-ticket, delay or cancellation notification, and receipts for any additional expenses incurred.
      2.
Check your eligibility — confirm your departure airport is in the EU or EEA, that you arrived 3+ hours late at your final destination, and that the disruption was within Austrian's control.
      3.
Submit a claim to Austrian — use the feedback and claims form on austrian.com. Confirm you are requesting cash compensation, not a voucher. Austrian should respond within a reasonable timeframe.
      4.
Escalate if rejected — file a complaint with Austria's Agentur für Passagier- und Fahrgastrechte (apf), the national enforcement body for air passenger rights in Austria. For UK departures, escalate to the CAA. Austria's standard limitation period is 3 years.
      5.
Or let Voos handle everything — one submission, and we manage all correspondence, escalations, and legal steps. No win, no fee.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Vienna is in Austria (an EU country), so EC 261/2004 applies in full. A 4-hour arrival delay entitles you to compensation of €250–€600 depending on flight distance, provided the delay was within Austrian's control and not caused by extraordinary circumstances such as an ATC strike.

Yes. Because Austrian is an EU-registered carrier, EC 261/2004 applies to its flights arriving into the EU even from non-EU origins. New York–Vienna exceeds 6,800 km, making you eligible for the maximum €600 per passenger if the delay was within Austrian's control.

Yes. Strikes by Austrian's own employees — ground staff, pilots, or cabin crew — over internal pay and working conditions are not extraordinary circumstances under EC 261/2004. Austrian owes full compensation of €250–€600. The March 2024 Austrian strike is a documented example where affected passengers successfully received EC 261 compensation. Do not accept a rejection citing the strike.

No, not necessarily. Under EC 261/2004, you are entitled to be rerouted to your final destination "at the earliest opportunity" — not just via group flights. If Austrian offered you a later connection on Eurowings, SWISS, or Lufthansa while a faster alternative existed on another carrier, you can request the faster option, or book yourself and claim reimbursement. Always ask at the airport for all available options before accepting a rerouting.

Your claim should be directed to Austrian Airlines as the operating carrier. EC 261/2004 compensation is always owed by the airline that actually operated the flight — identified by the OS flight number — regardless of which airline sold the ticket. Austrian and Lufthansa are legally separate entities within the group.

In Austria, the general limitation period is 3 years from the date of the flight. In the UK it is 6 years. In other EU countries the limit typically ranges from 2 to 5 years depending on the departure country. Claim as soon as possible while evidence is fresh.

Yes. All Austrian Airlines flights — whether on Embraer, Airbus, or Boeing — are covered by EC 261/2004 in the same way. Austrian is phasing out its Embraer 195 fleet (being transferred to Air Dolomiti from late 2025 onwards), but flights operated under an OS flight number are fully covered regardless of the aircraft type.

The Agentur für Passagier- und Fahrgastrechte (apf) is Austria's national enforcement body for air passenger rights. If Austrian rejects your claim, you can file a free complaint with apf at apf.gv.at. apf can investigate the complaint and issue a binding recommendation. If you prefer to resolve the matter through legal action, Austrian courts also handle EC 261 claims.
      Compensation Amounts
      • Up to 1,500 km €250
      • 1,500 – 3,500 km €400
      • Over 3,500 km €600

Fixed by EC 261/2004 — Austrian cannot legally offer less. UK flights: up to £520 under UK261.
