Austrian Airlines (IATA: OS) is the flag carrier of Austria and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. Founded in 1957 and headquartered at Vienna International Airport (VIE), Austrian is a member of the Star Alliance and serves approximately 130 destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. Austrian is in the midst of a comprehensive fleet modernisation. It is retiring its entire fleet of 17 Embraer 195 regional aircraft (being transferred to Lufthansa Group sister company Air Dolomiti from late 2025) and replacing them with 6 new Airbus A320neo jets, the first arriving in summer 2026. On the long-haul side, Austrian is replacing its ageing Boeing 767-300ERs and Boeing 777-200ERs with up to 12 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with deliveries running through to 2028. Summer 2026 sees Austrian serve its largest ever network of 133 destinations.

Austrian Airlines is an EU-registered carrier headquartered in Austria, so EC 261/2004 applies broadly — both to flights departing from the EU and to flights arriving into the EU on Austrian from outside. This means passengers flying Austrian from New York, Tokyo, or Bangkok to Vienna are also covered, unlike those flying non-EU carriers on comparable routes.

Compensation is fixed by regulation and depends on flight distance — not ticket price or cabin class.
For flights over 3,500 km, compensation may be reduced to €300 if the arrival delay is between 3 and 4 hours. The full €600 applies when the delay exceeds 4 hours. Under UK261, the equivalent amounts are £220, £350, and £520.
You are entitled to compensation if your Austrian flight arrived at your final destination 3 or more hours late, the delay was caused by factors within Austrian's control, and the flight was covered by EC 261. The clock starts when the aircraft doors open at your destination — not at departure.
You are entitled to compensation if Austrian cancelled your flight and notified you fewer than 14 days before departure, and no comparable alternative was offered. You always have the right to a full cash refund or rerouting regardless of the notice period or reason for cancellation.
If Austrian denied you boarding against your will — typically due to overbooking — you are entitled to €250–€600 compensation, plus a full refund or rerouting, plus care at the airport.
Austrian Airlines has experienced significant labour disruptions. In March 2024, Austrian faced a 36-hour strike that resulted in widespread cancellations at Vienna Airport. Strikes by Austrian's own employees over internal pay and contract disputes are not considered extraordinary circumstances under European Court of Justice case law — Austrian owes compensation when its own staff go on strike. Passengers confirmed receiving full EC 261 compensation for the March 2024 strike.
If Austrian cannot rebook you promptly on its own flights, you are entitled to be rebooked on any available alternative — including other airlines — to reach your destination as soon as possible. Austrian may try to reroute you only via Lufthansa Group carriers (Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings). You are not obliged to accept a later connection on a group airline if a faster alternative exists. If you paid for your own rerouting, keep all receipts and claim reimbursement.
If Austrian moved you to a lower cabin class for operational reasons, you are entitled to a partial ticket refund under EC 261:

These care rights apply even during extraordinary circumstances. Keep all receipts — if Austrian failed to provide these, you can claim reimbursement for reasonable expenses.
